PLEASE NOTE: At any time, individual states may  add or delete states with which they have reciprocity or offer recognition.

This may affect the "state count" and coverage for the Utah permit as well as other state's permits displayed below as examples.

I will update the information on this page as it is confirmed by UTAH BCI or similar state based sources.

Please EXERCISE CAUTION if traveling to these states or using your UT, FL, VA, AZ or other permit for coverage.

ALWAYS check with the official agency for the state you are / will be in, IN ADVANCE of carrying there, to ensure you are covered and carrying legally.

Why obtain a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit?

Utah's permit is the most recognized in the nation in terms of coverage, and is the least expensive option offering substantial multistate coverage.

Utah's permit covers 36 states for Utah residents, 32 states for non-residents. (Six states only recognize permits held by residents of the issuing state, this is covered in the class, Utah residents can carry in 4 of those 6 states, hence the difference in the count).

Coverage examples of commonly available permits as compared to Utah or when combined with Utah follows ... you can request comparisons with your home state via email.

A PA resident with a PA LTCF and UT CFP enjoys 36 states combined coverage.

An OH resident with an OH CHP and UT CFP enjoys 34 states combined coverage, a substantial increase over the 24 state coverage offered by the Ohio CHP alone.

While in those states that recognize and honor the Utah permit or other permits, you have all of the privileges (and all of the restrictions) that a resident possessing that states permit would enjoy***.

(***An exception exists regarding K thru 12 schools, covered as part of the class, regarding carry in School Zones. Email to ask  about specifics.)

TIP: Should you have a spouse or adult child with whom you commonly travel, or who may be in a vehicle where you commonly carry or store a firearm, obtaining a Utah permit is strongly advised - you may prevent them from accidentally becoming a felon simply because you step out of your vehicle while a firearm is still concealed, in the glove box or center console, etc ... (Course attendees must be at least 20 years of age and can apply upon reaching age 21)

Course usually runs  9 hrs depending upon the number of questions, the experience level of those attending, number of breaks taken, and administrative time afterwards for application processing and fingerprinting.

Depending upon group size, please allow 9+  hours for the course + processing, perhaps a bit more for larger groups due to the time required for fingerprinting.

Attendees will be provided a printed course outline and blank applications. Your application will then be endorsed with the Utah State Seal as proof of completion of training.

Attendees _must_ bring the following:

-- medium or fine BLACK ink pen

-- Driver's License with CURRENT address or address update card (a print out from the state DMV website is acceptable for class purposes)

-- any currently held carry permit(s)

Attendees may bring the following:

-- water / soda (no alcoholic beverages)

-- snack / lunch (snacking during the course is ok, to save time)

The course fee is $90 per person, for large groups some discounting for the class organizer / site host and potentially an assistant are negotiable. Discount programs are also in place for select groups; please include your username or member # if from a group such as PAFOA, FOAC, WVCDL, VCDL, SCCC, active duty military / reserves / guard, LEO's or members of the Patriot Guard. Email me for information.

Classroom is a COLD, SAFE classroom environment meaning NO LIVE FIREARMS OR AMMUNITION. Safe weapons manipulation including safety checks, clearance drills, stoppages and jams are covered using inert dummy ammo.

Instructor brings 6 to 12 demo firearms, you need not bring a firearm to the class unless you have specific questions regarding that firearm. NO ONE is to carry a loaded firearm openly or concealed in the class room, EVERYONE must safely execute unload BEFORE entering the class room in accordance with and in a safe zone to be designated by the class organizer or site host. ANYONE exhibiting an unsafe practice may be required to leave the session and forfeit their course fee. SAFETY FIRST - ALWAYS.

Fingerprinting is normally $15 when performed at Utah BCI.

I do have a portable fingerprinting station and often waive this fee when performing prints on site or as a discount for most groups / group discount programs. Fingerprinting is performed by sworn law enforcement personnel.

Attendees may also choose to be provided a fingerprint card and have local law enforcement perform their prints at their convenience.

Permit is $51 for the initial application (first 5 years), $15 for each 5 year renewal.

Renewals are a single page form, notarized, no retraining or resubmission of previous documents or fingerprints.

(Offered for comparison: Florida is the next most recognized permit, but at much greater expense: 32 states, $117 initial + $107 every renewal, renewals require resubmission of a complete application + documents + fingerprints, renewing a FL permit once would cost more than 4 DECADES worth of Utah renewals). Depending upon your home state permit's coverage, most folks only gain NM via the Florida permit and lose MN vs. the Utah CFP.

Course attendees must be 20 years of age. Applications may be submitted 60  days prior to your 21st birthday. Initial application for the permit can be submitted up to 1 year from the date of training, so for example you can pay for and attend the course, then submit for your permit a paycheck or two later (or months afterwards) to spread out your costs.

Current and retired Law Enforcement may still benefit from the Utah course / permit, especially if they are not qualified under HR 218 / LEOSA (nationwide concealed carry for law enforcement). Even if covered by HR 218, their spouses and adult children are not, and as such would benefit from the Utah course / permit.

Current processing time is roughly 35-65 days per the state, so those attending the course who promptly send in their application packets should receive their permits in approx. 2 months.

Upon successful completion of the course, each attendee leaves the class with:

-- Initial application endorsed by Instructor and Utah State Seal

-- Fingerprint card (blank) or prints performed by Instructor

A checklist is printed on the back of the Initial application. After the class, you will need:

-- 1 passport sized photo

-- photo copy of Driver's License and any address update card

-- photo copy of any currently held permit/s, including your home state permit if it is a state with which Utah has an agreement in place.

Folks with a past minor offense or similar may need additional documents, this can be discussed privately via email upon request.

A link to a copy of the new / initial permit application (including instructions / questions / disqualifiers) is below for your review.
